How do you Prioritise bugs along with feature requests ?

Nov 12

Everyday its hard to get time for bug fixing, so try to allocate fixed hours every weeks.

how to you prioritise bugs
If a bug was addressed on the day it was created otherwise it takes around 24 times longer. It'll take one hour on the same day but after 2-3 weeks it will take more than a day to fix it and also recover the affected places.

In general, I can say priority is more align towards business value and severity is focus on impact of bug.

I'm using priority & Severity based assignment to bugs. To be honest, always bug fixing is not among favourite & preferred tasks.

If a bug is creating a value for the customer, it can be treated as any other PBI.

If that bug is part of the story, then it needs to be addressed within the same sprint, otherwise we contradict with the DoD.

In Scrum, being "bug free" is often one of the acceptance criteria or part of the Definition of Done.

That way bugs are tested for and addressed during the Sprint or are discovered during the Sprint Review and are put on the very next Sprint.

If a bug is discovered later, then it is put on the Prioritised Product Backlog and addressed in the appropriate Sprint based on how it hinders delivering value to the customer/end user.

Embrace Failure for Success

As a project manager, the fear of failure can be overwhelming, but it's crucial to overcome it. Reporting failures or issues is vital.

It opens communication channels and helps build alliances with those who can assist and support your project. Many hesitate to try new techniques, like the Pomodoro Technique, fearing they won't complete tasks in the given time. This fear prevents growth and learning.

Time-Boxing: The Ultimate Productivity Hack

Time-boxing is a powerful technique to maximize the effectiveness of your 24-hour day. With time-boxing, your team will be more focused, accomplish more, and avoid burnout. Start time-boxing today and watch your productivity soar!

Here’s how to get started:

1. List Your Tasks: Write down everything you and your team aim to accomplish within a specific timeframe. Categorize by job function to ensure time is spent where it matters most.

2. Estimate Time Needed: Carefully think through each task and estimate how long each will take. This helps keep your planning realistic and on track.

Benefits of time-boxing:

- Forces detailed planning and realistic time allocation.
- Sets clear expectations and boundaries for your team.
- Enhances your ability to estimate task durations.
- Identifies and eliminates time-wasting activities.

How do you decide what to work on first?

Is prioritisation is becoming difficult for you? To rationally balance these real world challenges to set right priorities to product backlog items.

There are multiple prioritisation techniques. Today i would like to discuss about the one which I mostly used as beginner.

It can offer product to make well-informed decisions, also to minimise personal biases in decision making, and help them manage their priorities.

RICE (Reach*Impact*confidence/Effort) which is also widely used for prioritisation.

RICE (Reach*Impact*confidence/Effort)

Reach: How many user will this decision impact ? Impact: how much will this going everyone ? (3,2,1,0.5 times) Confidence: How confident you are? (High-100, Med-80, Low-50) Effort: How many hours it will take?

score = (Reach*Impact*confidence/Effort).

How 5-Hour Rule helped me to grow my skills?

Today, I would like to discuss the rule [5-Hour Rule] which benefited me most in past years. It adds more value to achieving career goals.

We all are doing our best in our current positions but sometimes it feels like we are stuck or unable to advance with our goals. What is the 5-hour rule? Empact founder Michael Simmons coined the phrase, the five-hour rule, regarding reading and learning.

This rule can be traced back to the life of Benjamin Franklin who spent about an hour a day on deliberate learning. He started his day early to read, write, create personal goals and monitor his progress. We can say that at least one hour every working day is allocated to learning new skills or gaining knowledge about your roles and responsibilities. You can also count to go through all the features inside your current project and explore functionalities. It will definitely help us to keep up to date in a fast changing world.

We can say that there is no real secret but self-discipline leads to success. This rule can play an important factor in your personal and professional development.

Honestly, no-one takes it seriously but the most successful people in the world dedicate at least 5 hours a week to deliberate learning. You can choose an appropriate time for you in a day depending upon your schedule.

I personally feel that in a long period it will not only deliver incredible results but also increase in self discipline work.

How to be effective as a lead for your team?

As a leader, You're the most visible across the team. Always remember you're the role model for your team. Your behaviour at critical moments will possibly followed by team members. Self-trust is the first secret of success.

if you want to lead as an effective way, the below mentioned ways helped me a lot.

1) Be Proactive -

It is about taking responsibility for your actions instead of blaming others. If you have clear sense of purpose to a difficult situation. Respond in a way that is in the long-term interests rather than just quick wins.

2) Adapt feedback from failures -

When things don't go according to plan, or even fail. Such a moments may be awkward but they needn't spell disaster. What you learned from the experience and identify improvement areas to be better?

3) Work Life balance - Look after your health and important relationships. you'll be in best position to ensure that these outlasts the project.

4) Avoid unnecessary work -

Being in early may inspire your team to follow in your footsteps.  if you work at 16 hours a day on regular basis, you must demoralise then my setting high standards.  you can save your energy in case of crisis or critical issue at weekends at short notice.

How to accelerate team growth and understand team dynamics?

Managing the growth and development of your team effectively is essential if you're to avoid confusions. Like projects teams have growth cycles.

A successful team depends on complementary, rather than conflicting roles. According to Bruce Tuckman Model, The search for roles and goals produces a recognisable pattern of team development.

Forming- An initial Period where roles and purpose not yet defined.

Storming- Jostling for position, with clarity of purpose unlikely, but team roles not fully defined

Norming- Mutual trust and confidence grows, the beginning of shared leadership emerged.

Performing- A high level of mutual understandings means that the team is now greater than sum of its parts.

Adjourning- Team members are ready to be apart means significant team changes

Glad to have your thoughts as well.
